Telikom employees and the Papua New Guinea Communications Workers Union staged a strike this morning in protest over a decision by the National Executive Council (NEC) to appoint Mahesh Patel as Chairman of Board of Directors of Kumul Telikom and John Mangos as Managing Director. The National President of PNG Communications Workers Association Mr Nug Mamtirin urged the National Government to reconsider the NEC decision of last week as it was not in the best interest of its workers. He made this remarks before giving the petition to the Chief Secretary Issac Lupari. He said they have given seven working days to the Prime Minister to go through their petition. Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari upon receiving the petition said he will bring the petition to the Prime Minister to discuss the issue. Chief Secretary Lupari while appreciating the staff and Union members in their approach in relaying their issue to the national government said they were professional in their approach. He said that he will discuss the petition with the Prime Minister and address the staff and the Union of the outcome of their decision. Meanwhile General Secretary for PNGCWU Mr Jeffery Borari stressed that they have a contingent plan in place to make their next move if outcome of government decision on their petition is not in their favour. He said they have to register their grievances to the Chief Secretary who will then write to the Electoral Commission and request for voting by staff of Telikom PNG in relation to their grievances. Approval from Electoral Commission for voting will see staff stop work and vote either to go for work or to hold strike. If everyone agrees to go on strike, they will then decide on the strike strategy. He said they are hoping the matter will soon be resolved and workers can concentrate on their work.
