Port Moresby City residents and business houses, suffered a total power cut for the whole day.
P-N-G Power workers staged a stop work this morning, shutting down Rouna Power Stations that feed the entire city. They did this in protest over outstanding grievances like, working conditions and pay packages, among others. PNG Power workers especially the operational division in Port Moresby gathered in numbers this morning at the 4- mile 24 hour service center. They put up notice at the gate advising public on their strike action, leaving customers stranded outside the gate. Media personals were also told not to get any information from the workers, as they were instructed not to speak to the media, however NBC was fortunate to capture all the drama that unfold today, starting at 4-mile operational center all the way to Rouna up at Sogeri. After a brief at 4-mile, the workers in bus loads went up to Rouna Power Stations to turn off power there. No one has came out clear to tell the media has to what was going on today (Wednesday) however NBC NEWS understand it is due to the ongoing demands to the board and management of PNG Power, on their working conditions and others. Up at Rouna 2 the main gates were tightly controlled by the staff at Rouna 2, allowing only the protesting staff who going up from Moresby to enter. As soon as their colleagues arrived at Rouna 2 where the main power supply is, they all agreed and switch off the main power station there. Rouna 2 is the main supplier for both water and power supply to the city, however the staff said there action wont affect water supply. After shutting down Rouna 2 they moved down, still in numbers to Rouna 1, 3 and 4 switching off all feeder power stations there, including Moitaka. This now leaves privately owned Hunjun Power Station at Kanudi to supply power, however according to a reliable source Port Moresby city needs about 90 mega watts of power each day, and hunjun can not supply the city as it produce less power. Meanwhile, after switching off power stations at Rouna, they all came back to 4- mile, demanding to meet with government, and management as they felt their issues and demands raised earlier with management were not addressed properly. Their actions has left Port Moresby city and surrounding areas with out power whole day. Its understood other main centers nation wide are also taking similar actions. Comments are closed.
