Redevelopment of National Fisheries College Waterfront Facilities to Boost Fisheries Sector28/2/2024
In a significant move to enhance Papua New Guinea's fisheries sector, the National Fisheries College waterfront facilities in Kavieng are set to undergo redevelopment, as announced by National Fisheries Authority (NFA) Managing Director Justin Ilakini. The redevelopment initiative is a result of a partnership forged among the NFA, the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica). The official signing ceremony, signaling the commencement of the waterfront facilities' redevelopment, took place last week. Highlighting the pivotal role of the National Fisheries College as Papua New Guinea's premier institution for fisheries and marine resources training, Ilakini revealed that the college currently offers courses in coastal fisheries operations, post-harvest techniques, fisheries governance, aquaculture, and fisheries business. As part of the redevelopment plan, Ilakini announced the introduction of new courses, including trap net operations, value-adding refrigerator mechanics, and onboard training (OBT). These additions are set to be implemented in collaboration with the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan (OFCF). Masayuki Hayashi, the preparatory survey team leader from Jica, emphasized the significance of the National Fisheries College project not only for Papua New Guinea but also for the broader Pacific region. Hayashi assured that Jica is fully committed to advancing the project, following its approval in Tokyo. The redevelopment of the National Fisheries College waterfront facilities is anticipated to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the fisheries sector, fostering education and training in various crucial aspects of the industry.
