Polye urges PM O'Neill to refrain from politicizing humanitarian issues with Manam Islanders12/3/2016 Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has been urged to refrain from politicizing Manam Resettlement Authority Bill. The Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye made the call after finding out that Mr O’Neill, wanted all the politicians from Madang to get united to resubmit the bill for consideration. Mr Polye said there were proper forums for politics and not on this. He added that the Manam Islanders had a humanitarian issue, which should have taken precedence over any other business last year in Parliament. “The Prime Minister has no right to impose on these MPs to suit his political agendas," said Polye. “They (Manam Islanders) have been displaced for more than a decade. It is noble for the Prime Minister to swallow his pride and listen to the plight of our small people,” said a concerned Polye. He asked which special group of people the Prime Minister would turn his ears to when he continued to ignore the plight of the islanders. “From reports received, children are being deprived of their right to education and health services among others. Limited access to land will result in food shortage and eventually our people there will be starved to death,” said Polye. Mr Polye described the government’s ignorance as ‘discriminatory and amounts to deprivation of human rights. He further said it was about time the government should look into the struggles the people were silently experiencing. “When we are in government, we will strip the office of National Disasters from the Department of Inter-government relations and establish a separate entity called National Emergency and Disasters Mitigation Council," said Polye. He said the council would be responsible for natural disasters, fires, explosions, disease outbreaks, global warming related disasters and other unexpected emergencies of similar nature. The Opposition Leader said NEDMC would also be responsible for resettlement with proper public amenities and facilities for those affected. The bill was sponsored by Madang governor Jim Kas and Bogia MP John Hickey.
