Police authorities in Port Moresby, have approved a public protest by local NGO groups, planned for tomorrow, against actions of the Prime Minister and the government.
National Capital District Acting Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N'dranou informed the media this morning, after meeting with his divisional and police station commanders, that he's allowing the People Power Movement-led protest to go ahead tomorrow. This is after receiving a two-weeks notice of the planned event, and agreeing to it. Mr. N'dranou however says, police will be out in full force to provide security to the demonstration, and he is calling on the public in Port Moresby to abide by the law while conducting their assembly. The city's police boss says, there will be no public marching, but people can only gather at the National Archives area and stage the demonstration. A couple more conditions of the NGO-led protest, is that there must not be any mention of issues before the courts for deliberation, and the gathering must end at two o'clock in the afternoon. Mr. N'dranou says he is merely following the law, and the law also allows for such events and freedom of speech and expression, which is what he is allowing. A further meeting on tomorrow's planned protest will be called by Acting Commissioner Geoffery Vaki and Acting Deputy Commissioner Operations Jim Andrews this afternoon. Comments are closed.
