Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has accused Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) of deliberately misleading the public through media channels, creating dissent surrounding the no-confidence motion. Marape criticized the Opposition's tactics, stating that their engagement with the media on this matter is irresponsible. The Prime Minister declared, "It is very irresponsible of the Opposition MPs or the so-called alternative government to be contesting issues concerning their vote of no confidence motion in the public space, which the Parliament Private Business Committee has deemed to be flawed and does not qualify to be listed on Parliament notice." Marape's statement comes in response to the Opposition's surprising announcement that they will forego challenging the actions of the Private Business Committee in court. Initially welcoming the Opposition's intention to address their grievances in court, Marape expressed surprise at their decision to wait for the parliamentary session in May before mounting another challenge. While acknowledging the Opposition's constitutional right to challenge the government, Marape criticized their reliance on social media and mainstream outlets, alleging that it contributes to public confusion, apprehension, and tension. He stated, "It is becoming apparent that a big part of their political strategies involves the use of social media or mainstream media outlets to cause public confusion, apprehension, and tension." Highlighting the inconsistency in the Opposition's actions, Marape implied a lack of confidence in their legal stance. He pointed out that despite the earlier declaration to challenge the Private Business Committee's actions in court after parliament adjourned to May, they have now chosen to wait and utilize social media for dissent. Marape also underscored the Opposition's failure to demonstrate significant support during February's parliamentary session. Notably, during the vote to declare Papua New Guinea a Christian country, the Opposition struggled to gather more than 14 members, showcasing a lack of strength against the overwhelming majority supporting the government.
