Parliament is yet to respond to a petition by the people of Central province to lift the betel-nut ban in Port Moresby.
The petition was presented by governor Kila Haoda during sitting last week. National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop told Parliament, he has taken a tough and risky decision as a politician to impose the betelnut ban, inviting Central and Gulf leaders to discuss a win-win situation over the issue. Mr. Parkop apologised to Governor Haoda and other elected members for the inconvenience caused to their people, but says his decision will still stand. Governor Parkop says most people who are affected are his own voters, especially the unemployed people who depend entirely on betelnut. Parkop says since the ban was imposed, he has been receiving criticisms from people who are affected by his decision but says he accept their criticisms. He says as a leader, he needs to make tough and risky decision when and where it is due, and in this case, it is for the good of the nation's capital, as the gateway into the country Comments are closed.
