The K10 million promised to Lutheran Shipping by Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill, has not been delivered yet.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill wanted to reassure Lutheran faithfuls throughout the country and in particular Morobe Province that the money he had promised to bail out the financially-troubled and now liquidated business arm of the church is still with the government. The Prime Minister wanted Luship and the church to sort out their mess, including an overhaul of the board of the shipping company and the board of its holding company Kambang Holdings before the money can be released. He also wanted prudent managers to put in charge of the management of the company. The Prime Minister said while he has being waiting for that to happen, the company was put into receivership and since has sold some its fleet. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill made this remarks after ELC Yabem Circuit leaders led by former Morobe Governor Sir Jerry Nalau and former Assistant Commission of Police Giosi Labi threatened to bar Morobe Coastal Shipping from berthing at Maneba and Buki wharves in Finschhafen because it had not entered into agreements with the local landowners. The landowners are of the belief that the money promised to Luship was used by Morobe MPs to form Morobe Coastal Shipping and to purchase couple of Luship fleet. But, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said it was the initiative of the Morobe MPs and it is not the money he had promised. Yabem circuit president Gulunguoke Giusu said Morobe Coastal shipping will not be allowed to berth at Maneba and Buki as they have planned and mentioned in the papers for its operation to begin this month. Mr Giusu said the agreement for the usages of the wharves were done with Lutheran were the faithfuls gave their land for service and no form of compensation was sought or demanded from the church or its business arm.
