The University of Papua New Guinea has finally set September 5th 2016, as the day for the resumption of classes.
To resume classes, the National Executive Council has approved 12 million kina for UPNG. UPNG Council is also planning for a reconciliation ceremony. Following weeks of students unrest, the UPNG Council has decided to terminate the 2016 academic year. But the government has requested the Council that classes be resumed, with assurance to meet the cost of lost study times. The government remain true to its commitment and has approved 12 million kina to assist the University to bring back its academic programs. UPNG Council has made this known when setting the exact date for the resumption of classes today (Thursday 10th August). This money will meet essential expenditures including addressing security related issues, repair damages to university properties among others. The university in the meantime is thankful for the government assistance. Meanwhile, the University Council in consultation with the Senate has approved Monday, the 5th of September 2016 as the resumption day for all classes at both Waigani and Taurama Campuses. Students are expected to arrived at the campus and to complete their resumption and registration forms during the last week of August. The Council has set September 2nd as the reconciliation day. Churches are invited to facilitate the peace ceremony between the students and the university administration. UPNG Vice Chancellor Professor Albert Mellam said, the senate is looking forward to greeting the students and engaging with them in the reconciliation ceremony. A fresh start is expected at UPNG after the reconciliation.
