NATIONAL Broadcasting Corporation managing director Memafu Kapera says up to K21 million has been misused in the State-owned organisation.
He told a general staff meeting on the review of the Broadcasting Act that the commission had received K21 million in the 2007 Supplementary Budget. Kapera told the meeting, which was attended by lawyers from the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission, Information and Communication secretary Paulias Korni, NBC board members, management and staff in Port Moresby that “we have got nothing to show for it right across the country”. “An audit has already been carried out by the Auditor-General and given to the Prime Minister and Chief Secretary, and is with Task Force Sweep now,” he said. He said he became managing director when the NBC had outstanding bills totaling K19 million. “When I took over in 2010, we sat down and slowly paid off all our debts to overseas and domestic service providers. “We are slowly paying it off,” Kapera said. He said NBC was taking stock of all its land and property across the country as a lot was “stolen”. “Our staff have sold off a lot of our land and properties,” Kapera said. “We are clamping down on a lot of these corrupt activities. We are writing policies to mitigate all these risks that have taken us all these years, so that we address some of these issues. “Absenteeism, corruption, is commonplace here. What you are owed, you will be paid. What you are not owed, you will not be paid.” Comments are closed.
