SOME members of the East Sepik provincial assembly have urged Sir Michael Somare to step down as Governor and allow another MP to take over.
Wewak Island LLG president Pius Bugatar said they wanted Sir Michael to relinquish the Governor’s post but remain as regional MP until the next general election. He hoped that this would be Sir Michael’s last term as MP. “We honour the Grand Chief for bringing the country to independence and for the many significant achievements over the last 45 years he was in politics,” Bugatar said. “He is undoubtedly the longest serving member of parliament in the Commonwealth and across the globe. “We are proud of his achievement but we believe time has come for him to take a breather and play a pivotal role for young leaders to take this province forward. “We believe this is the best New Year gift he will offer to the people of East Sepik who have supported him throughout his outstanding political career.” He called on provincial assembly members and the people of East Sepik to pray for God’s wisdom in guiding Sir Michael when he retires. He said the province had seen deteriorating law and order, insubordination and non-performance by civil servants. PNG Facts / The National Comments are closed.
