More than 400 youths around Lae City mobilized and attacked informal market vendors and pickpockets this morning. The incident is in relation to the attack on Lae City Enforcement officers last Friday when they warned informal market vendors not to do business in public places but were attacked by vendors, who were believed to be from Highlands Region.It was also said that the vendors also burnt the Morobe Provincial Flag. Youths mainly from Morobe started to attack vendors and petty criminals at 8am this morning which saw schools and business houses, government agencies and PMV services came to an abrupt stop. The situation remains tense as police monitor the situation ensuring the safety of the public and properties. Youths were seen patrolling top town, china town and the main market. The situation currently remains tense with no one walking around the city as it is now totally empty and only police vehicles are patrolling the town areas. However, the youths have outnumbered the police and are chasing anyone suspected to be a street vendor. At this time all street vendors have gone into hiding. No reports of any casualties have surfaced so far but the situation is very tense at the moment, there is no work or school and all PMV operations in the town has ceased.
