Police in Jiwaka have confirmed that the two girls reported earlier to have been given away as part of a compensation payment in Jiwaka are still with their families.
The girls, aged 13 and 15, were reported to have been included as a compensation payment in Jimi, Jiwaka over the death of a school teacher from Kol village. Provincial police commander Supt Joseph Tondop had sent a team of officers to Kol to investigate the matter after it was highlighted by the media. Tondop said the girls were still in Menjhinpol village although the matter of them being given away as compensation had been discussed between the villagers of Menjhinpol and Kol. He said K6,000 and 30 pigs were paid as belkol to the relatives of the teacher from Kol. Tondop said the relatives of the teacher had demanded K50,000 and 100 pigs. When the villagers at Menjhinpol could not meet that demand, they decided that the two girls should be given away as part of the compensation. “It was only a discussion but in actual fact it did not take place. It was not true that the girls were given away as compensation,” he said. “The girls are with their parents and my men have managed to take their photographs.” He said police did not investigate the death of the teacher because of the remoteness of the area. Tondop said the people who killed the teacher and those who planned to give away the girls were known to police. He said they would be arrested because of their actions.
