The two big event of the 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture started this morning, with the canoe regatta ceremony at Ela Beach, where paddlers travelled from Manubada Island to Ela Beach.
This ceremony signifies the Melanesian people's history of being seafarers. Visiting delegates and participants from other Melanesian countries, including local Papua New Guineans are gathering at Ela Beach to witness this ceremony. "The canoe regatta is one of the events kick-starting the 5th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival leading up to the official opening ceremony later this afternoon. The single canoes from the Aroma coast known as monks have been assembled at Manubada Island island yesterday for this ceremony. This is despite the actual program that expected canoes from Milne Bay, Manus and Western provinces to be part of this ceremony. The actual program was cancelled due to late arrival of canoes from those provinces. Despite this minor hiccup, the organisers have gone ahead to continue the program. The paddlers will paddle the canoes from Manubada Island across to Ela Beach where speeches will be made and the program will continue to reception at Crown Plaza Hotel. Comments are closed.
