A TOTAL OF €166 million (K767m) has been allocated for the 11th European Development Fund for development purposes in the Pacific region.
Priority areas of development have been identified by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat which will be facilitating and managing this money. Topping the priority areas is regional economic integration with the biggest cut of €50 million (K231m), which aims to support, strengthen the regional trade and business enabling environment and enhance the private sector involvement in economic integration. Other areas of development seen to be important are the sustainable management of natural resources and environment, management of waste and inclusive and accountable governance. The 11th EDF Pacific Regional Indicative program addresses the challenges of the Pacific members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific group of states (ACP) by reference to the frame work of Pacific Regionalism, representing a recasting of the Pacific Plan, the EU agenda for change and conclusions and recommendation of the recent evaluations of EU’s co-operation with the Pacific Region. The European Union program officer for the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Jerry Huekwahin, said these priority areas of development are decided by the countries during a consultative meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. In the meeting, it was realised that some of the important issues faced by Papua New Guinea and similarly by neighbouring Pacific Islands communities, that need addressing like water, sanitation and hygiene were included in the allocation. "PNG was present but they didn’t speak out. You have to speak out. Make your position, your country’s position. If there are real issues that your country is facing, speak out. "You don’t go just for the sake of attending a regional meeting and expect other small nations to speak. It’s an opportunity to put issues on the table so people can deliberate on them and make decisions."
