Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas Urges Action Amidst Escalating Tribal Violence in Papua New Guinea28/2/2024
Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, has expressed alarm over the surge in tribal violence in Wapenamanda. The recent outbreak of conflict has resulted in the tragic loss of more than 50 lives in the last fortnight. Governor Ipatas revealed that the root cause of the intensified violence lies in the allure of money and the availability of high-powered guns, drawing young individuals into the conflict. While tribal fights have been a longstanding issue in the region, the recent escalation is attributed to increased funding. "Publicity surrounding the use of high-powered guns and the rising death toll has brought this tribal conflict to the forefront. Tribal fights have persisted for a while, but the scale has elevated due to the influx of funding," Governor Ipatas stated. The conflict is concentrated along the Highlands highway, a mere 10-minute drive outside of Wabag. Governor Ipatas expressed hope that the public would not be caught in the crossfire and appealed to the warring tribes to heed the Prime Minister's call for laying down weapons.
Addressing those who provide financial support to the youth involved in the conflict, Governor Ipatas questioned their moral responsibility, stating, "For those educated individuals and businessmen who are continuously funding our young people, how will you face God in the next life? You must understand that you will pay the price." Governor Ipatas emphasized that the surge in violence is linked to the funding that reaches the young individuals, many of whom see it as an opportunity to make money. Unfortunately, innocent lives are paying the ultimate price in this deadly feud. Assuring Prime Minister James Marape of their commitment, Governor Ipatas informed that he and other leaders in Enga are working diligently to address the law and order challenges. In response, Prime Minister Marape called on the young men of Enga, particularly those from the two tribes at the border between Wapenamanda and Wabag, to reconsider their involvement in the conflict. "As your father and prime minister, I'm asking you to lay down your arms. Return to education, reconnect with the church, engage in small businesses, and pursue lawful avenues," urged Prime Minister Marape in an effort to restore peace and stability in the region.
