Two young men from Goilala in Central Province have pleaded not guilty to a brutal murder case of a father of four in 2003.
The Port Moresby incident finally came to trial this morning (3/12/14) before the Waigani Criminal Court, eleven years after the incident. The two accused, John Karo and Peter Repo are both from Tapini and residence of Teteh settlement. The court was told, on November sixth 2003, after a drinking session with a group of youths at the settlement, the duo with others proceeded to the family home of the Late Ian Liriope around 3 a-m after an unsuccessful attempt of ransacking a neighbours house. They forced there way in and drag the mother of four into her room and one of them raped her. Three others were outside and one was allege to have shot Mr Liriope with a hand gun before dragging him inside to watch the wife being raped. He was then chopped with an axe and left to die. The wife was brought outside to a waiting group but a passing vehicle disturb them giving her the opportunity to escape. The family house was then burnt to ashes with the body inside. Both accused pleaded not guilty to willful murder resulting in the wife recalling and giving evidence to the horrific incident. The trial continues with more witnesses expected to take the stand. The person involved in sexually assulting the mother has already been sentenced and is serving time at Bomana Prison. Comments are closed.
