An email has been circulated around creating fear to ordinary Papua New Guineans today that Police Mobile Squad from Mt Hagen were coming down to Port Moresby to provide security for the Prime Minister and that there was going to be a big confrontation between them and Mobile Squad from the McGregor Police Barracks.
This information is misleading the public, according to PNGFM News WHP Provincial Police Commander for Western Highlands Province, Chief Supt. Martin Lakari, stated that he has not released any of his mobile squad in the province to come down to Port Moresby, and also he has not received any orders from the Police Hierarchy to deploy any mobile squad to POM, so the information is not true. PPC Lakari says such rumors are just speculations as the Police force follows the chain of command. This was also confirmed to be untrue information by the Deputy Commissioner Operation Jim Andrews today stating that it’s a false rumor. Chief Andrews says that movements of the mobile squad are controlled by the commissioner and the deputy commissioner operations. Meanwhile, PNG public are warned of internet and social media scam. The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Hon Jim Miringtoro MP, has called on members of the public to be aware of scams, lies and other misleading information appearing on some social media sites. The minister said that while there are credible commentators and some interesting debate on social media, there are also a number of desperate radical activists who seek to cause public distress. “The internet and social media has enriched our society and created access to a wealth of information,” Mr Miringtoro said. “However, some social media sites have become places where radicals try to spread lies, cause distress and harm reputations. “I hope all Papua New Guineans will be cautious when they read SMS messages, posts, tweets, blog entries and other information that seems suspicious. “Check where the information came from and it is not from a credible source such as a news organization or known person, treat it with a grain of salt. “The radical activist bloggers are not published in main stream news because they lack credibility so they resort to social media ranting.
