In response to concerns over inflation and rising prices of goods and services, economist Paul Barker has criticized the government's role in Papua New Guinea's economy and society, urging officials to reassess their priorities. Barker emphasized that while the country continues to function, it relies heavily on the resilience of its communities, farmers, churches, civil society, and both formal and informal business sectors. However, he cautioned that Papua New Guinea faces significant challenges, including economic, social, and security issues such as high population growth, limited opportunities, violence, and conflicts. Highlighting numerous deficiencies within the government, Barker cited approximately 1,300 underperforming institutions, weak governance, and severely inadequate public services, particularly in healthcare and education. He stressed the urgent need for reforms to enhance the government's effectiveness and accountability, including the enforcement of social and environmental standards and regulations. Moreover, Barker emphasized the importance of allowing the business sector to operate more efficiently without unnecessary government interference. He argued that fostering a conducive environment for investment and job creation would bolster confidence and revenue generation for the state. Critically, Barker attributed many of Papua New Guinea's current challenges to the government's own actions, including a culture of inducements and rewards that prioritize political gain over effective governance. He called for a significant overhaul to break free from this cycle and pave the way for a brighter future for the nation's youth and future generations. Mr. Barker stressed the necessity for the government to engage in introspection and undertake substantial reforms to address the prevailing inefficiencies, lack of accountability, and bleak economic prospects facing Papua New Guinea.
