Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill has stated that the Government will continue to build new infrastructure because of the country’s booming population growth.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill, who was speaking at the official opening of the newly expanded Jackson International Airport terminal facilities, said Papua New Guinea’s population growth of an average of 3 per cent is one of the highest in the world. "It is important that we participate in the opening of some of these very important infrastructures for our country because it not only encourages leadership of the country to continue to deliver for our nation, but believing in ourselves that this can be done in our country. "Papua New Guinea is fast changing, and I know that there are a few that believe that it is not changing, but it is only a minority, less than a few hundreds, but millions of Papua New Guineans believe that their country is heading in the right direction, and airport infrastructure is one area where this Government has focused since coming into a office, some three four years ago. "Why are we doing all the massive investments throughout the country? It is only because we have an increasing population, 3 per cent on average is one of the highest in the world, but also the middle classes are demanding more travel, and business is demanding infrastructure that is going to make it easier for them to do business in those communities. "We will continue to do so, infrastructure is not only building so that we can have a showpiece of an asset for the nation, but it provides jobs for Papua New Guineans, it provides meals on the table for Papua New Guineans and it is our duty to ensure they continue to be employed, that is why I am pleased to be here to open this airport. "It is really the gateway for Papua New Guinea, millions of people will travel over the next few years on this airport, but I will assure you, we will outgrow this asset, because the demand and the number of people travelling will increase, that is why it is important that we continue to build for the expansion of the next stage of the airport which is to expand the runway, and build a new international terminal, making sure that we get it ready by 2018. "Not only for APEC but because it is estimated that close to six million people will utilise this airport after 2018, in anybody’s language, in international standard it is a substantial number of people travelling through this airport.” "That is why we need to capture the market that is there, so that we become the gateway for the global community coming into the Pacific and we become the gateway for the Pacific to the markets like the Asian region."
