Three Stop and Shop Port Moresby Vipers Club players and an official appeared before the Kokopo District Court today on charges of threatening and drinking in a moving vehicle and other alcohol-related offences.
Two of them are Port Moresby-based policemen. Provincial Police Commander, Anthony Wagambie Junior said the four were arrested yesterday morning after they followed the referee from a shop down to the police station in Kokopo where a woman saw what was happening and alerted duty police. The duty police stopped the vehicle and arrested the four men. According to a police report and that of the complainant - the referee, the Vipers players and official were apparently under the influence of alcohol when they approached him in their vehicle and began threatening him. They tried to attack him and he managed to escape towards the Kokopo Police Station. When they saw him heading in that direction, they sped towards the station in an attempt to stop him. Mr Wagambie Junior applauded the quick action by his officers, in dealing with this case and appealed to inter-city teams not to take their grievances from the field onto the streets, but pursue them professionally, through the proper channel.
