SUNDAY will be the last throw of the dice for potential Papua New Guinea Kumul prospects to get a look in for World Cup selection, coach Adrian Lam says.
National selectors will finalise the PNG Gold and PNG Red teams after the Digicel Cup grand final. The teams will play in a trial match slated for September 22 in Port Moresby. Lam, pictured, yesterday confirmed the Goroka Lahanis and Port Moresby Vipers players had a golden opportunity to catch the eye of national selectors and become part of the World Cup squad. “Obviously the opportunity is there for players to showcase themselves and with both teams filtered with players who have been in and out of the Team Kumul programme it should be a good match-up,” he said. Lam gave credit to the Vipers for what he described as an absolutely impressive performance to beat the Kokopo Gurias 32-8 in the preliminary final on Sunday. “I’m just happy to see that what we have been teaching through the camps is paying off, especially in the area of line-speed and aggression in defence,” Lam said. He said the trial would include Australian and English-based players who were available. “Those overseas-based players who do not make it due to their club commitments will be considered on merit by national selectors,” he said. Lam said he was sure national selectors had a good idea of what the World Cup squad would look like. The final squad will be named after the trial match in preparation for the Prime Minister’s XIII clash in Kokopo on September 29. The World Cup will be held in England in October-November.
