THE venue for the biggest game of the year is already sold out.
The Kalabond Oval, the home of the Agmark Gurias will only have standing room available for die-hard supporters to see their television National Rugby League (NRL) stars play the Papua New Guinea Prime Minister’s XIII on Sunday. The once in a life-time clash is expecting the 6000 capacity facility to break at the seams with people still expected to come in by boat from neighbouring New Ireland and West New Britain provinces. To just get a rare glimpse of their NRL idols will be satisfying but to see them live in action is a rarity. The new improved grand-stand has boosted seating capacity, but will not cater for the majority. It’s going to be “chocka block” said Kumul assistant coach Michael Marum yesterday. He said the tickets for the corporate boxes and grand-stand, sold at Agmark, were sold out. “While for the people on the day it’s going to be a mass of people trying to squeeze into the Kalabond,” Marum, who is also an employee of Agmark Kokopo, said. Marum lamented that it was a long time coming for rugby league supporters in East New Britain and it is all good and rewarding for the PNGRFL to give this opportunity. “The team is just going through the final phases with coach Adrian Lam,” he said. “When the Australians arrive on Friday, both teams will be involved in community engagements at Kokopo Secondary School and visit Vunapope Hospital,” Marum said. On the players, Marum did however confirm that Mark Mexico, who didn’t play in the trial last week is confirmed to play after recovering from a broken arm that put a stop to his Digicel Cup season this year. For the match, Marum also confirmed that they will be using 21 players and at this stage it will be unlimited inter-change. He laughed off the Kalabond “Graveyard” myth that it may deliver … but added that if does who will be the wiser, he added. The National Comments are closed.
