Feleti Mateo New Zealand Warriors utility Feleti Mateo received some potentially encouraging news in the aftermath of a disastrous NRL season when the former Tongan international was named in the Kangaroos train-on squad for next month's trans-Tasman test in Townsville. Mateo was included in the initial 20-man group in contention for the one-off international on October 13 and the Prime Ministers XIII to play Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on September 23. A member of the Tongan World Cup squad in 2008, Sydney-born Mateo declared his allegiance to New South Wales and Australia earlier this year and was touted as a potential State of Origin representative. However, he had to settle for playing in the annual City v Country trial game. The ball-playing second rower, who started at five-eighth in the Warriors' season-ending capitulation to the Canberra Raiders in Auckland yesterday, is the only Warrior included - Sydney Roosters-bound five-eighth James Maloney missed the cut after being considered a potential NSW representative in the lead-up to State of Origin.
The players named today are from clubs that missed the NRL finals series, more will be added as teams are eliminated. Train-on squad: Greg Bird (Gold Coast Titans), Jamal Idris (Gold Coast Titans), Nate Myles (Gold Coast Titans), William Zillman (Gold Coast Titans), Darius Boyd (Newcastle Knights), Akuila Uate (Newcastle Knights), Lachlan Coote (Penrith Panthers), Tim Grant (Penrith Panthers), Michael Jennings (Penrith Panthers), Luke Lewis (Penrith Panthers), Ben Creagh (St George Illawarra Dragons), Brett Morris (St George Illawarra Dragons), Trent Merrin (St George Illawarra Dragons), Beau Scott (St George Illawarra Dragons), Jake Friend (Sydney Roosters), Mitchell Pearce (Sydney Roosters), Feleti Mateo (NZ Warriors), Robbie Farah (Wests Tigers), Chris Lawrence (Wests Tigers), Aaron Woods (Wests Tigers).
