HUNTERS coach Michael Marum says the only difference between his team and an NRL side is the professional attitude of players. The Queensland Cup 2015 coach-of-the-year, who is halfway through a week-long stint with the Brisbane Broncos, said from his observations and interactions so far with Wayne Bennett’s 25-man squad was the attention to detail in their preparations as well as the individual professionalism shown by the players was something he would take back when he returns home on Saturday. “We (Hunters) do pretty much the same things they do accept over here they pay a lot of attention to detail,” Marum, who arrived in Brisbane on Sunday, said. “They really focus on the small things. The basics like passing the ball and things like that we probably take for granted. They’re very professional in everything they do and the players know what they have to do at training and everyone gets to it when the session starts.” Marum, who is staying with former Kumul coach and mentor Bob Bennett in the Brisbane suburb of Annerley, said he started attending training sessions on Monday and had the chance to talk to head coach Wayne Bennett, Bob’s elder brother, but said most of their chats centred on club administration and management. It makes sense since Wayne, 66, has earned a reputation over 39 years of coaching – 29 in the NRL of which 22 years have been at the Broncos – more as an excellent “man manager” rather than his equally impressive technical nous. “I’ve been having talks with Wayne on the way to training and his advice is more about managing a football team than anything else. On the first day I was introduced to the players, the top 25, the coaching staff and got to watch them train. It was a great opportunity to learn how NRL players train and treat each session.” Marum, returns home on Saturday, admitted the Hunters players needed to be more focused on their jobs, on and off the field, but he added the NRL and the Q-Cup were two different competitions. “I’d have to say that most of my guys (Hunters) haven’t reached that level of professionalism, that dedication, commitment and focus that the pros have. “The Broncos obviously are an NRL club and everything here is much bigger than what we have. Wayne has something like 35 staff under him – trainers, strappers, physios, assistants, people who maintain the training venue, the uniforms – and things like that, whereas at the Hunters there’s just me, Jason (Tassell – head trainer), Nigel (Hukula – assistant coach), Roger (Laka – assistant coach) and two other guys.”
