Political View by Ink News It is a public knowledge that there are many senior politicians who will be vying for the Prime Minister post after the 2022 National General Election. However, the Governor General will only invite a party that has majority of its MPs winning right across the country to form the next government. Therefore, MPs who are most likely to retain their seat and comeback to the form the next govt are listed below. Interestingly the are all party leaders who have the political will and financially backing to form the next govt. You have seen that the post has left the NA out because currently there have been a power tussle between party members on who could be the next party leader to lead them into 2022 elections. Also the Opposition leader has been left our because he has less chances of forming the next govt given that he had nil interest in the PM seat despite championing various VoNC during this term of Parliament. Now for them to be our Prime Minister, it depends on us the people who have the political mandate with us. After every five years we get the chance to elect a representative into parliament as our political rep.
Under our constitution that is the only golden opportunity given to us the people to vote for someone who will be our voice on the floor of parliament and more so make legislative changes and bring development to us the people in the next five years. Do we still need to vote for the recycled MPs, or do we have to vote for fresh bloods who have the aspirations and polititical desire to carry the burden of our people? We have no time to waste, we need a leader who can made strategic decisions and who is indecisive when it comes to running the affairs of this country. Today we are facing a very unprecedented time where our country’s demand outweigh our proposed annual budget due to the rapid population growth. Also the ongoing effect of coronavirus pandemic and the hard-global economic situation facing our trading partners and global community at large has placed us in a very strain situation. Our revenue has been depleted because of the closure of the Porgera Mine and several other resource projects holdups such as the Wafi Golpu Mine and the Papua LNG project, Pynang Gas Project etc... 1. POLITICAL POWERHOUSE We have a lot of veteran politicians who will be vying for the Prime Ministership post and we cannot deny the fact that it is also their ambition to be the Prime Minister after the 2022 election. Let’s take a look at some of them. We will list five to six MPs who will vying for the PM post; a). James Marape- Current PM James Marape the current PANGU Pati leader is a contestant and whether you like it or not he is in the government of the day and he is leading the ruling party in the govt coaltion and with many of the policy and legislatives changes speadheaded by his government he will have many unfinished business to come back and complete it. Does he have the qualities of a good PM? He has shown in the two years of his kinship that he is akin to make PNG the richest black Christian nation on earth but does that buy it all. Political technocrats have their own say but from general observation he lacks private sector leadership mechanism to be a transformational leader. He was only a public servant, a ministerial staff and later venture into politics. Despite being in politics for over 15 years, being Education Minister, twice as Finance Minister and Leader of Government Business and the current PM, he still got a lot to work on. He therefore lack the wisdom and leadership qualities to retain this hot seat. b). Peter Oniell- Former Prime Minister, leader of PNC Party Peter O’Neill had a decorated political career all camouflaged by the name tag of being the father of Infrastructure seeing the level of development taking place in the country during his tenureship as PM for two terms until he was overthrown by PMJM in August of 2019 in a Vote of No Confidence. Does he still has the last shot to make? With numerous corrupt allegations levelled against the former PM being involved in various financial transaction that has held the country at ransom his stint to be a PM is undermined by every Papua New Guinea atm. The UBS loan Commission of Inquiry, the Paul Paraka Saga and many other related corrupt dealings all done during his term as PM has really undermined his capability to vie for the PM seat one more time. Although he had private sector management skills that compels him to run for the office, his personal and public dealings doesn’t warrants his return. At the moment Papua New Guinea doenst need that. c) Sam Basil-Deputy PM and leader of United Labour Party. Sam Basil has a good track record of resurrecting the PANGU PATI in Morobe. Only if theres was no power tussel in the Morobe PANGU PATI branch he would still be the leader and today be the PM as well. Does he possess the quality of a PM? He does but then he has been referred to the leadership tribunal and only if he is clearled by the tribunal he could vie for the PM post. d). William Duma- Minister for State Enterprise and Leader of URP William Duma is a fourth term MP and will be looking to retain his seat in 2022 election. He has a lot at his hands at the moment being alleged to have involved in the Manumanu Land Deal which he has been cleared by the Police and Ombudsman Commission. The Horizon Deal has also rubbed some mud up his shelves but all in all Duma is capable to vie for the PM seat given his qualification at corporate board level and being a private practicing lawyer before joining politics. He has the broad experience in business dealings and can be a good Prime Minister only if he is tested at that level. e). Richard Maru- Leader of Peoples First Party. Richard Maru is the most qualified person to run the country come 2022. He has the qualification and leadership traits that transcends from his district of Yangoru Saussia. Theres is no need to look further, Maru once shelved a sinking NDB form liquidation during his tenure ship as MD for the Peoples bank and has transformed the bank to be a profitable entity to what it is today. He is the brain behind the government vision 2050 and holds with him the direction this country needs to be really a rich black Christian nation. Maru is known for talking less and let his action do the talking. He has with him what the country needs at the moment to transformed PNG into a robust economy in the coming years only if he has the whip with him. He is more than qualified for the job given his experience in the private sector, being a State Minister for two terms and more so being an intergral part of the current development experience in the country. Do we need him to be our PM?? PNG at this point in time need a leader who can rescue us from this shrinking mass that is caused by indecisive leadership and continuous political powerplay that has held the people of PNG at ransom. We need a neutral leader who has the heart for the simple people of PNG and Richard Maru is the men for the job. A son from the East brought political independence to PNG and only a son of the East will bring Economic Independence to PNG and no other else will do. f). Don Pomb Polye- Leader of Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party The Kandep MP has stood the test of time being sidelined from govt in 2014 when he decided not to approve the controversial UBS loan that is currently affecting the country's economy. He was reinstated as a MP after he challenged Alfred Manase through the Court of Dispute Returns and was reinstated through a court allowed recount just this year. Is he qualified to be the next PM? Don Polye is a visionary leader with impeccable reputation and integrity and has leadership capabilities to lead the country given his personal achievement being a public servant and a private businessman. This is his third term in parliament after the court reinstated him. He has held numerous senior ministerial portfolio in the Somare Govt and later the Oniel govt but was sacked in 2014 and later lost his seat in 2017 election but again won through court directed recount. He could be a PM nominee after the 2022 NGE only if he master the numbers required to form the govt. SUMMARY Who can be our PM after 2022? Given PANGU PATI popularity Marape can most likely come in but if people of PNG can speak through the ballots it will be a more interesting conclusion. Only if the 10 people can vote freely, fairly and honestly for a leader who can stand for the truth and alleviate Papua New Guinea from the current situation of unprecedented economic downturn, the writer picks the next PM in this respect; 1. RICHARD MARU- PFP 2. DON POMB POLYE- THE Party 3. PETER ONIELL- PNC 4. JAMES MARAPE- PANGU 5. WILLIAM DUMA- URP 6. SAM BASIL - ULP Let the ballot speak!!!
