By Nason Mul Few rogue policemen think they are above the law and can do anything. This perception is immature and totally unacceptable. Police officers are supposed to be well decipline in carry outing their responsibilities . Their responsibility is to enforce the law and order to maintain peace , security and harmony in our societies. Sadly, it is a different story all together when it come to PNG police. Police bruality is common in our country. Our police luck ethical values and principles to understand the nature of their work. For example, as you can see the picture above policemen with alcohol and ladies while wearing police uniforms. This is illegal. This is unethical. The government properties should not be use by government officials over time . They supposed to work within their schedule time and return the property back. I've seen many police officers using government vehicles as their own. They can drive anyway at anytime under the cost of government budget. Why are we facing disciplinary problem with our law and order agency? From my observation I can see that the huge problem is with the recruitment process. potential candidates which are supposed to be given priority on merits basis are being sidelined. Unqualified, candidates with money or through Political affiliations or network has been given priority. Most of these candidates used forged documents and even some used other people documents to apply. We don't have electronic scanning system to dictate fake certificate. Everything is done manually so it is impossible to identify forged documents. As are result of recruiting candidates with low IQ or nil knowledge we continually face problem with our police officers. However, the other factors seems to be the duration of the training at the Bomana training college. The 6 months training is not enough. We need energetic, well equipped, competent, and well informed OFFICERS. Can the good Police Minister Hon. Bryan Kramer and PMJM extend the training to 4 years so that they can graduate with bachelor in policing. We need well educated OFFICERS to enforce our law and order. This Police brutality thing will never stop until and unless we recruit with honesty on merits and of course extend the duration of training to 4 years. Finally, our top cops must lead by example. I urge Commissioner Manning not to be politically affiliated. God bless.
