by Terence Kapipi Yacop IF SOMEONE PROMISES YOU OVERNIGHT DEVELOPMENT, THEY ARE LYING 80% of Papua New Guinea is without electricity since 1975. By the end of 2020 - more than 3 million would have died without seeing "light". To bring electricity to the 80%, it would probably cost the National Government over 100 Billion Kina. Our National Government budget used to be 5 billion to 8 billion to 15 billion. Where would the government get such funding to connect everywhere with electricity? Na sapos ol focus lo electricity stap, pay blo ol public servant, hausick marasin, police agriculture na ol disla ba osem wanem? Such is the sad scenario we live in now and therefore one might say "the spirit is willing but the finance is weak" Gone are the days of bountiful and surplus money from Government - atleast for the short term. That is the reality that we must all deal with and embrace and accept so we can realign our expectations going forward. For those districts that are seeing something happening on the ground, be thankful and be grateful because you are seeing something not many districts around the country are privilege to. If you add up all the Development needs in our country and especially in respective districts - Roads, Bridges, Electricity - the reality that we will all come face to face with is that the needs are too many, and the our budget cannot prioritise everything at the same time. In such situations, sitting at the position to prioritise what needs to be done first and who to give funding priority to is such an uncomfortable decision that leaders must make - knowing full well that we might not satisfy everyone and others will still be unhappy. So lets count the blessings instead of focusing too much on the negatives. If only the past leaders built a better road, the future leaders will focus on electricity, if only the past leaders built a Hospital, the future leaders would have focused on building Schools. But if the past generation has not done anything tangible and have not uplifted the status quo, it is very irresponsible to blame all the suffering and struggles that we go through on the current leader. At such a time, understanding and patience is the key, work with the leader and push him to be the best you want him to be.
