Political Commentary By David Levi PORT MORESBY- Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape attempts to gain control of the country by hook or by crook is dangerously shaking the fundamental state apparatus and the very pillars that uphold democracy. First the police then the army and now the Electoral Commission Marape holds them all in a terrifying grip and is squeezing to submit them to his will. With the help of the already compromised security forces and the slackness of a totally indecisive and incompetent Electoral Commissioner Marape has no problem walking his will through. The Marape onslaught is two fold; destroy the winning chances of his opponents and force win for his own Pangu Party candidates. This strategy worked well in Hela where polling started early and is being swiftly replicated across the country. Marape is neither a popular politician nor a smart political tactician but makes up for his lack of political savvy in some cunningly bizarre and macabre ways. From a leading political analyst Marape is a Machiavellian meaning attaining power in any means possible.
In the Marape arsenal is threat, coercion, bribe and blackmail but the primary weapons is lie/deceit veiled in good old Happy Sabbath. He has morphed from a small time junior officer in the public service, to MP for Tari/Pori, with totally no leadership experience and long-term vision for the country. Papua New Guineans are now feeling the impact of Marape government's bad decisions. High inflation affecting the cost of basic goods and services, no foreign direct investment, thousands out of job, families struggling to pay for school fees and medical care and law and order issues getting out of hand. On statesmanship Marape stands at the very shallow end. He lacks the fortitude of the country great statesman like the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill who were versed in the art of government especially actively engaged in conducting the business of the state in both domestic and international. Internationally, Marape's mere presence shakes investor confidence and is a 'Reef Light' directing away foreign direct investment. No outsider in the right frame of mind would want to engage their hard earned capital or their nation's interest with a Idi Amin who changes laws whenever he pleases and wears impromptu like a badge of honor. King David was a sheppard, he killed a lion and the bear shepparding his father's sheep, while his elders brothers were out fighting the Philistines. He even killed Goliath, the giant with only five (5) small stones. (1st Samuel chapters 16 and 17 please read to help you understand what Iam talking about.) He was anointed to be king of Israel but waited patiently for 15 years until king Saul was death.
