May We Be Free! With PNG’s national calendar that annually celebrates the queen’s birthdate, her death would now be remembered in every anniversary, or we might dedicate another day to respect the crowning day of our new king. The globe grieved over the death of the queen of England as tears fell from the most prominent faces of the world – naming from senators, prime ministers, presidents and inventors to conglomerated giants. Although her timely passing is a great loss, it is about time the systematic shackles are broken, especially on a political and economic standpoint. As a member-state to the commonwealth since 1975, our nation’s sovereignty has given a portion of our constitutional powers to the governor-general who is representing the kingdom of England, reflecting our neo-colonialism status. Papua New Guinea Politicians are not the only ones in the quest for overall prosperity. Every citizen is part of the quest and so has an important role to play. But people are deeply bound by a belief that politicians will provide everything to their doorstep. And such perception prevents collective efforts from many individuals, diminishing unity overtime. In order for a vehicle to move from point A to point B, it must be road worthy. Naming from a vehicle driver, steering-rod, clutch and injector to a tire, they must all be positioned firmly to make the trip possible. And that is exactly the case with our political culture. The politicians need our collective roles to better our lives as a whole. By Sylvester Gawi
Well it's been a hectic week since I arrived in Port Moresby from Lae and Wewak last week. As a staff member of our good Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, I've been reluctant a bit to publish certain details and information and only assisted to get my mainstream media colleagues to do the filming and writing. Alot has been said from the outside on what sort of elected leaders that are camping at Loloata island to form the next government of our beloved nation - Papua New Guinea. Everyone has been talking about people with questionable backgrounds and characters being elected into parliament - that power solely rests with respective constituents. Political Commentary By David Levi PORT MORESBY- Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape attempts to gain control of the country by hook or by crook is dangerously shaking the fundamental state apparatus and the very pillars that uphold democracy. First the police then the army and now the Electoral Commission Marape holds them all in a terrifying grip and is squeezing to submit them to his will. With the help of the already compromised security forces and the slackness of a totally indecisive and incompetent Electoral Commissioner Marape has no problem walking his will through. The Marape onslaught is two fold; destroy the winning chances of his opponents and force win for his own Pangu Party candidates. This strategy worked well in Hela where polling started early and is being swiftly replicated across the country. Today Hela mourns the death of true, fair and democratic elections whilst the perpetrators celebrate the fruits of their evil labour. Feelings of despair and hopelessness grip the Hela land far and wide. Even those in the celebration circles know deep down in them that what had happened in the elections will remain a huge scar in the Province’s history. Based on the conduct of elections in Hela in 2022 and in many parts of the Highlands region I honestly believe that democratic processes of elections are under seized by power hungry people. Hela people have witnessed a massive election fraud conducted province-wide jointly by certain candidates, electoral commission agents, senior public servants, warlords and gunmen. Commentary by Okuk Rogerson Reckless PNG PM James Marape begging for money as always, previously told Australian PM Hon Scott Morrison point blank if you don't give me money i will go to Beijing. Australia has since supported PNG with a few billions in low interest loans, grants etc . Marape most likely pulled the same trick on PM Hon Anthony Albanese in Fiji during Pacific Islands Forum Meeting as he left in haste during the PNG's election after he was first to win. No surprise there. As longest serving Finance Minister in PNG's history and now Prime Minister who was declared 1st to win in "PNG's Failed & Rigged Election" weeks and months ahead of majority of candidates in PNG Marape is directly responsible for PNG's unprecedented & unnecessary $21 billion Debt. Many don't understand that $21 billion dollars is MASSIVE, UNSUSTAINABLE & VERY DESTRUCTIVE AMOUNT OF DEBT for a poor PNG. Infact PNG is rich but made poor by reckless and unpatriotic career politicians. Without Australia PNG would precede Sri Lanka into economic collapse by a couple of years. James Marape and former PM Peter Oneil are the most destructive Prime Ministers in PNG's history. ALL those implicated in the K3 billion Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) loan deal will be prosecuted and sent to jail, says Prime Minister James Marape. Marape called it the “biggest government corruption” deal under the Peter O’Neill-led government. “After the formation of the (new) government, we will prosecute those who misused money or played a part in the loan (deal),” he said. Marape said the inquiry into the loan deal was completed in April just when the country was about to start the General Election 2022 process. “So the Government had to put their prosecution on hold until after the election,” he said. By David Lepi Whilst the answer is the obvious let us give the benefit of the doubt. If time is the factor as what Marape is complaining that his 3 years in office wasn't enough for him to prove himself better than the preceding Peter O'Neill government, then Sir Mekere Morauta could perhaps teach Marape how it is done to change an economy for the better in just 2 years. In Morauta's case the situation was much worse than from what Marape took over in 2019. Morauta brought the PNG economy back from the brink of the abyss in 1999 through implementing vital reforms. How was he better than Marape? By Dr Joe Ketan Papua New Guinea has not lived up to expectations. Windfall revenue from natural resources, in billions of US dollars, have been squandered, or stolen by PNG leaders and their foreign business partners. Our people are living in grinding poverty. State systems are not working. Government Ministers and Public Servants are responsible for the sad state of affairs. Getting right people to important jobs will help solve some of our problems. We need to make things work again, by voting good men and women, a lot of them, to replace the bad and ugly. The bad and ugly have caused us much pain and sorrow. Our leaders have grown fat on the spoils of office, while our people struggle to make ends meet under extremely difficult conditions. One time Kiunga Rural Local Level Government (KRLLG) President and no nonsense North Fly MP Hon.James Donald urged LLG Presidents and councillors alike to challenge Inter Government Relations Minister Hon.Pila Niningi's call for the resignation of LLG Presidents and councillors who wish to contest in the coming 2022 National General Elections. The People's Reform Party parliamentary leader concluded that according to law,the call made by Minister Niningi is unlawful and unconstitutional. “Any Local Level Government Council President can challenge this circular or announcement from the Minister.” Donald said. The first term MP said that there is no specific section of the law on the Local Level Government Act 1997 that states a sitting LLG President must resign in advance. |
