There is good news for Yangoru Sausia students of East Sepik who will be studying in tertiary schools this year; their member has come to their assistance with a school fee subsidy scheme.
Member and Minister for Trade and Commerce, Richard Maru announced that the scheme will soon be finalized and ready to assist parents and students. “As responsible leaders we fully appreciate the financial hardship our ordinary village based parents are facing and hence the need for the district to intervene with some assistance,” Maru said. The scheme however is restricted only to students living in the district and introduced as a means to also assist families who are affected by the Cocoa Pod Borer disease to pay for their children’s school fees. “I want to make it clear that we are not paying all the fees, but only assisting with a subsidy,” he said. “Parents will still have to pay their part of the fees while we top up with the subsidy assistance. We will decide on the level of subsidy on the 28th of this month and advise all parents and students accordingly.” Meantime, the details of the scheme and forms will be made available to applicants, who will qualify for assistance under the scheme on the 29th of this month.
