The National Court has found a woman guilty of misappropriating 66 thousand kina to repay her husband’s debts. Mrs Margaret Ani, 28 from Pari Village outside Port Moresby has been told to pay back the money.
She has to do it within 12 months, or serve jail time. A sentence was handed down yesterday by Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika. This is a bizarre incident were Margret forced to steal from the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society whilst working as a volunteer treasurer. The prisoner forged and uttered the signature of patron Dadi Toka Jr on 24 cheque's totaling 66, 974 kina within a four months period. The court found, she used the money for personal use, top amongst them repaying debts of the husband. The court also found some of the money was used by the partner to gamble. Sir Gibs said it was not her responsibility to repay his debts and her actions caused her to suffer in shame. She was sentenced to three years but will be serve time outside of prison allowing her to look for the money and repay by February next year.
