Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill can survive current moves by the Opposition to unseat him through a vote of no-confidence and lead the country until 2017 when the next national elections are due.
That is the observation by many people after Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti, a three-time prime minister, spoke publicly for the first time in support of Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill last Friday. Hundreds of people braved a heavy downpour in neighbouring Jiwaka Province to listen to Mr Wingti speak at Kuli village in the Anglimp-South Waghi district. Mr Wingti, the first Highlands Prime Minister, is still regarded and respected by many as a key strategists and veteran in the political corridors of Parliament House. He was speaking as guest of honor during the opening of the new Pele Memorial High School at Kuli which was attended by Land and Physical Planning Minister Benny Allen and local MP Komun Joe Koim. Mr Wingti, who has been criticised by many in the social media over his silence on the current vote of no-confidence debate, said Mr O’Neill is a good Prime Minister and must be allowed to continue his job. Mr Wingti praised the current polices of the O’Neill-led government in promoting tuition fee-free education, free basic health care, law and order, and major infrastructure development investments. Many rural people and Wingti’s fanatics wanted to hear the People’s Democratic Movement party leader speak on his stance on the current political situation in Waigani, including the no-confidence vote. However, the tone of his language for the support of Mr O’Neill said it all. Mr Wingti said after 40 years of independence, under PM O’Neill’s reign, the country was now seeing major developments never seen before. He said 40 years ago, PNG did not have enough money like today and that was the reason why the country could not be developed and there was no need to blame past and successive MPs and Prime Ministers. He said in the last 10 years, the economy of PNG was good and with a good Prime Minister like O’Neill and local MP like Komun Joe Koim delivering in the district front, people can rest assured that they are seeing "light after many years of dwelling in the dark".
