Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says, a Whistle-Blowers Protection Legislation, will be included among changes to the Organic Law, to create the Independent Commission Against Corruption, or ICAC.
Parliament overwhelmingly passed the Bill to create the ICAC, 91 votes to nil, last week. If legislated, the Whistle-Blowers Act will make PNG one of the first countries in the Pacific, to have laws protecting people who come out publicly to report corruption. Mr. O'Neil told the three-day Anti-Corruption Initiative Forum in Port Moresby, that a sound Freedom of Information legislation will also to be considered in the Organic Law. He adds that these measures may not end corruption, but is confident of them, making an immediate impact. Defending his government's creation of the ICAC, O'Neil said the anti-corruption body will be the central coordinating agency for the fight against corruption, and will build on the work of its predecessor the Task Force Sweep, and will not conflict its duties with the Ombudsman Commission or other law enforcement organizations. O'Neill says, an extensive Community Education campaign, will be conducted by relevant government agencies, before the ICAC becomes operational. Comments are closed.
