The United Liberation Movement for West Papua, has appealed to the current Pacific Islands Forum Chair and PNG Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, to begin negotiations with Indonesia for a fact finding mission into human rights abuses in West Papua.
The group's spokesperson, Benny Wenda, says an independent fact finding mission is important, because it will assist to identify and get people to speak openly about the real problems they face everyday. Mr. Wenda, says the Pacific Islands Forum has made a head start into these negotiations, and despite PNG having more bilateral, economic and trade interests with Indonesia, it must not confuse its position as per the leaders' decision. He also says, PNG has a moral responsibility to find a just resolution on behalf of the leaders and people of the Pacific, and he hopes it takes this stance and lead. Benny Wenda says the only two outcomes of this fact finding mission would be either Indonesia refusing the Pacific Island Forum's request, or it agrees and starts the difficult process, which will come with its own terms and conditions.
