PNGThe city of Port Moresby is facing a very critical condition in terms of the water level at the Sirinumu Dam the main supplier of water and power to the Nation’s Capital. The Management of Eda Ranu today revealed in a press conference that the water level at Sirinumu Dam has reached a seriously low point and residents and business houses in NCD are cautioned to control the manner in which water is being used daily and start to conserve water. Eda Ranu CEO, Mr Henry Mokono is appealing to the public and business houses in and around the city that regardless of us paying for the usage of water we need to be mindful and start limiting the usage of water or face serious water problems in a few months time. “As the city’s water authority the Management and Board of Eda Ranu would like to go out publicly now to tell our city residents that there is definitely a situation with the supply of water down to the city,” says Mr Mokono. He said that the prolonged El Nino condition that has been faced all around the country has also affected the city and we could be faced with a very serious water problem in a few months time if the dry spell continues as the water level is dropping very fast. “Our main message to the water consumers in the city is to be more careful to manage or conserve water in the manner in which we use our water, like using hoses to water flower gardens and was car using Eda Ranu treated water supply, you are basically wasting water,’’ says the CEO. According to the information and estimated data collected by Eda Ranu the Sirinumu Dam will over the next couple of months reach critical levels. According to estimated figures that Dam has a supply that can sustain the city between 8 to 10 months. “When we reach critical points on the water level, we’ve got contingency plans in place and the dreadful exercise of water rationing will take place in the city. Meaning we will cut of water supply to areas that we consider as non-revenue areas, like the villages or settlements around the city,” explain Mr Mokono. Eda Ranu Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Fifaia Matainaho stressed an important fact that the current water level at the Dam stands at 139million cubic metres mark but if it reaches the 50millilion cubic metre mark, power suppliers PNG Power will withdrew their services of hydro power supply and it will be left to Eda Ranu to utilise. Dr Matainaho reiterated that we need to take care of how we use water and start conserving water because scientifically the weather pattern is not doing us any good and we could be faced with a very critical situation with water in the coming months if we are not careful.
