Papua New Guinea currently has 13 prisoners on death row.
CS Commissioner Michael Waipo revealed this during the public forum on death penalty at the University of Papua New Guinea's main lecture theatre this morning. Waipo also raised the issue of cultural hindrance, saying the officials involved in the execution would be in danger because of the payback mentality in the traditional society. The Commissioner adds,the government would need about 500-million Kina, to construct an execution chamber as well as extra costs involved in training and the security of personnel. The forum will end today.
