Despite their defeat in the Vote of No Confidence (VoNC) against Prime Minister James Marape on Thursday, September 12th, the Opposition remains resolute. They are already eyeing November 26th, when Parliament reconvenes, as an opportunity to bring another VoNC against the Prime Minister. Opposition Leader Douglas Tomuriesa declared their intention to persist, stating that they will continue to push for the VoNC until it is done properly, despite having lost in the recent session. He expressed gratitude to the people of Papua New Guinea (PNG), their supporters, and family members, acknowledging that while they were fairly defeated, the Opposition remains committed to their cause. "The outcome may be disappointing for some, but seeing the entire Opposition united in the VoNC vote is encouraging," Tomuriesa said. He pointed out that Marape's 75 votes were significantly lower than the 104 he received following the elections, which, according to Tomuriesa, suggests that the Opposition is making progress.
The VoNC was driven by the numerous challenges facing the country, according to the Opposition. Tomuriesa urged the Prime Minister to stop spreading false information and criticized his decision to adjourn Parliament until November, given the pressing issues that need attention. However, he emphasized that the Opposition is ready to reorganize and return stronger for the next round. Currently, the Opposition boasts 34 members, although two were unable to vote due to illness, reducing their tally to 32 in the recent VoNC. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Marape, backed by his coalition, survived the VoNC and asserted that political disruptions slow down national progress. He reaffirmed his government’s focus on economic recovery, boosting police manpower, and infrastructure development. Marape expressed appreciation for his coalition partners and the democratic process, pledging his administration’s commitment to national security and unity as PNG approaches its 49th Independence Anniversary.
