Treasury Secretary Dairi Vele has denied direct involvement in allocating 50 million kina in 2014 to an Isreli Company for the purchase of a twin gas turbine generators.
The deal is now a subject of a major fraud investigation. In a paid media advertisement Vele claimed his department was only facilitating the payment. Secretary Vele said contrary to what the Fraud investigators had said he only gave directions for unspent funds totaling K50m to be made available to Bank of PNG. Vele said he was not in the country when all transaction took place and never knew how the payments were made as it wasn't his job and that of his department. The L-R group of companies delivered the two generators upon payment in 2014 but not without scrutiny by then Opposition Leader Belden Namah on the process involved in the purchase. Meantime, the Treasury Department has made an official police complaint against two senior fraud investigators for alleged unprofessional conduct. The two are Fraud Director Chief Superintendent Matthew Damaru and Detective Chief Inspector Timothy Gitua. Secretary Dairi Vele claimed in a media statement, the manner in which investigations were done into the twin turbine Israeli generators purchased by the government were questionable. Vele says his reputation was destroyed as both men didn't conduct the investigation in a professional manner and abused their powers. Among others he also say both men disobeyed the police commissioner, obtain the warrant of arrest without good reason, making false statements and lack of communication between all parties concerned. He said both men had failed to understand the government financial processes. Attempts to get comments from Mr. Damaru and Gitua have been unsuccessful.
