A first of its kind Cyber Security Training, facilitated by the United States Homeland Security for Royal Papua New Guinea Police Constabulary ended on a high note on Friday (29 September). The week long training on Cyber Security aspects, of policing crime in Papua New Guinea has resulted in certificates obtained by 23 police officers from different sections within the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. Assistant Commissioner of Police-Crimes Division Hodges Ette in congratulating the participants said that this knowledge and skills should not be kept to themselves but should be shared within their various departments and sections for the greater good of the police and the country. “ The information and the knowledge that you have gained is not yours, you are just a custodian passing through. Your responsibility and my responsibility are to ensure that this knowledge is put to the service of our nation, Papua New Guinea,”
ACP Ette said. ACP Ette said the underlying reason that the officers undertook this training was to protect this nation, and its citizens on the danger of online harassment, or people who will be taking advantage of the technology advancement in PNG. First Constable-Detective Rex Ponge from the National Fraud and Anti Corruption Directorate in acknowledging the US Homeland Security for the training stated that the training has opened his mind to the different types of threat that people can be victims to, with just a click of an android button. The Cyber Security Training was based on defending computers, servers, mobile devices, and electronic systems from on online attacks, how to investigate and capture online harassers, cyber bullies amongst,others. Constable Rex said the training has also taught them how to investigate cyber threats as police officers and on how to track down perpetrators wherever they are with the help of the training and the software’s that are used in this particular kind of job.
