Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - The United States Embassy in Port Moresby organized an enlightening information session at the American Center, focusing on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Lukautim Graun Program (LGP). Guest speakers, including Mr. Prabesh Aryal, Director of Finance and Operations for the USAID PNG Biodiversity Project, and Jordan Emmanuel Bulo, Deputy Chief of Party for the same project, shared insights into the initiative. Initiated in 2019 and executed by DT Global, the LGP aims to empower rural communities in Papua New Guinea to safeguard biodiversity and promote conservation efforts. Mr. Aryal emphasized that the project's objective is to foster collaboration among communities, government agencies, and the private sector to achieve conservation and sustainable development goals.
The project operates in seven provinces and focuses on the Bismark Forest Corridor and Madang Watershed. It has facilitated transparent decision-making on natural resource management and equipped local communities with skills for sustainable resource management. Additionally, the LGP has created opportunities for women to engage in economic activities, with recent support from a White House grant of US$3 million to promote gender equity. Over the past four years, the LGP has significantly contributed to conservation efforts, with achievements including improved management of over 250,000 hectares of biologically significant areas, support for over 1200 micro-enterprises, and training for approximately 3500 individuals in natural resource management. Moreover, the program has facilitated the adoption and implementation of laws, policies, and regulations to protect biodiversity and promote gender equality. The information session, hosted by the US Embassy's public affairs section and USAID, coincided with World Environment Day, observed on June 5, 2024. It served as a platform to showcase the LGP's accomplishments and reaffirm the commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development in Papua New Guinea. Also read Comments are closed.
