United Resources Party (URP) candidate Simo Kilepa, who has been leading counting for the Lufa Open seat in Eastern Highlands Province has been declared Member-elect. Mr. Kilepa was declared by the Returning Officer Petrus Awi at 3:15pm at the National Sports Institute in Goroka. Mr. Kilepa polled 14,390 votes surpassing the absolute majority mark of 11,829, defeating PNG Party candidate Ivitalo Sonic Saneto with 9,266 votes. Mr. Kilepa said his main focus will be on Agriculture, Education and Infrastructure.
He thanked the people of Lufa for their confidence, trust and approval to lead them for the next five years. Mr. Kilepa also thanked electoral officials and security personnel for their efforts in making sure the election was conducted peacefully, despite minor issues. Meantime, Mr. Kilepa is the fourth member to be declared in Eastern Highlands Province. The other four districts - Daulo, Okapa, Henganofi and Kainantu are expected to make declarations tomorrow.
