The University of Papua New Guinea Administration is concerned about the use of weapons in the current standoff between students.
In a media conference today in Port Moresby, Vice Chancellor Albert Mellam appealed to students to conduct themselves in a proper manner. Professor Mellam said, the administration is concerned about the use of bush knives among other weapons and urged students not to use them, adding, the University does not want classes affected. The Vice Chancellor said, although the Student Representative Council has indicated wanting the Administration's involvement, the matter remains an S-R-C issue. He said, the Administration can only facilitate issues like liasing with the Electoral Commission to conduct a referendum which was held on Monday, where results showed less than two-thousand students voted, out of which 1,200 wanted a protest while 699 went against this. The -S-R-C constitution however states, that majority has to be two-thirds of the total number of full-time registered students, which is over five-thousand. Meantime, Director-General of the Office of Higher Education, David Kavanmur, has commended the students for their restraint in the last month, appealing to them to adhere to their constitution.
