A two-day wilful murder trial involving two suspended law students at the University of Papua New Guinea, ended in Port Moresby, today.
Joseph Tande and Peter Martin, pleaded not guilty to the charges at the Waigani National Court. They were arrested and charged by police in 2012, for the death of late Obediah Igish, a third year student as well. It was an alcohol related incident that happened in October of the same year, outside the university's main gate, after the end of year exams Witnesses for the State gave evidence alleging the late Igish fell backwards hitting the pavement as a result of punches thrown at him. Whilst laying unconscious, he was alleged to have been repeatedly kicked on his head and chest area. An autopsy report confirmed internal bleeding causing his instant death. A Uni Force security, two former students, and doctor gave evidence today with the police investigator expected to appear next. The two accused have been suspended from studies, pending the outcome of the trial. They are out on a bail of K1,000 each.
