THE University of Technology council is in favour of the resumption of classes for the 2016 academic year, says chancellor Sir Nagora Bogan.
He urged everyone, after a council meeting on Monday, “to support Unitech with better and alternative ideas and incentives to complete the 2016 academic year”. Classes were disrupted after a protest by students which started in May. It resulted in the killing of student Graham Romanong in his dormitory on June 25, and the burning of buildings on campus. “The council and management regret the unfortunate incident and urge all parties and leaders to support Unitech with better and alternative ideas and incentives to complete the 2016 academic year,” Sir Nagora said. “The council endorses and stands firmly behind the vice-chancellor (Dr Albert Schram) and his management team to continue to manage the university, after accepting his report on the boycott.” He said the Unitech council and management were currently working on: Coordinating and supporting the police in conducting a swift investigation into the incidents and bring those allegedly involved to justice; Enforcing a dusk-to-dawn curfew on campus as per a cabinet decision, with support from police; Cooperating with the Government’s appointed commission-of-inquiry into the student unrest; Establishing an alternative messing facility; and, Commencing the process of peace, reconciliation, healing and reparation.
