Unitech students, staff fail to meet Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology7/3/2014
MINISTER for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Delilah Gore yesterday assured students and staff of the University of Technology that the Government is fully aware of their petition.
She said the Government is keen to identify long term solutions and also the main points of the students’ petition, which called for the return of Dr Albert Schram to the country to take up his post as vice chancellor of the university. Ms Gore did not meet with the student and staff association representatives as she was led to believe yesterday, but went ahead to urge them to return to classes. "We care for your education as you are the future leaders of this country and such issue being raised has been fully made aware to the government and that we must all work together having common understanding in bringing solutions," Ms Gore said. She appealed to all students to return to classes as she has convene discussions with Prime Minister Peter O’Neill about their petition. When asked about Dr Schram’s visa arrangements, she said with her new appointment as the Minister for Higher Education there will be consultations with stakeholders regarding the issue. Present also was Director General for the Office of Higher Education David Kavanamur, who said the university is a property of the state and that students should understand and respect political leaders who try their very best in bringing solutions. He said staff positions within a state owned institutions are funded by the Government and everyone must be mindful as to how to come about solving issues instead of breaching processes and take decision making into their own hands. "As future educated elites of this country clear understanding must prevail in having issues solved because the Government is faced with so much issues that needs suitable long term solutions," said Professor Kavanamur. The minister said the students’ petition is now before the Government and that they should return to classes. Unitech chancellor Sir Nagora Bogan also made strong statements about the actions by students but said the decisive leadership of the minister has proven that long term solutions must be found to deal with such issues. It was not clear yesterday what action the students would take after failing to meet with Ms Gore and her delegation. PNG Facts/ Post Courier Comments are closed.
