Amidst the threats of looming strike, the PNG Teacher’s Association has issued an appeal to teachers nationwide to carry on work and remain calm.
This was from the PNGTA Regional Secretary Raymond Ray in a joint dialogue with the Education Minister Nick Kuman, Teaching Service Commission Chairman Baran Sori and other representatives today. There have already been threats of industrial strike action over the non-payments and other disgruntlements with pay increases and conditions of teachers and this strike is a measure of last resort. Mr Ray added that the onus now rests on the National Government via the Teaching Service Commission and the Education Department’s Payroll Division to do an audit of the pay system. He outlined this when presenting the claims and conditions of the PNGTA to the relevant authorities. The claims are as follows: Pay rises of teachers nationwide must be implemented, and the 2,000 graduate teachers must be enrolled or registered into public system. Moreover, pay slips should be provided for each teacher accordingly so they are able to cross-check the salaries. It is understood the National Government via the Department of Education and the Teacher’s Service Commission are working to address the issues raised. Meanwhile, all parties present agreed the future of the students is a matter of national concern and should not be jeopardized by teachers as the primary service givers. Comments are closed.
