Next year is big year in international development for PNG, says United Nations. The UN marked its 69 anniversary of the founding of the United Nations last Friday.
During the celebration PNG is reminded of the challenge for the final stock take of Medium Development Goal achievements will take place at the end of the year. Also the new global goals or Sustainable Development Goals will be focus of international development efforts after 2015. UN Resident Coordinator in PNG Roy Trivedy says PNG Government is playing an important role internationally in helping to shape the post 2015 goals. "In Papua New Guinea, all of us need to continue our efforts to achieve further and faster progress as against the current international Goals – the MDGs," Mr Trivedy said. "UN agencies intend to continue to focus our efforts in the four main work areas that have already been mentioned. "We will also focus on improving the effectiveness of UN agencies including through a selected number of programmes that we will implement jointly – for example in Bougainville.” During the celebrations, Mr Trivedy acknowledged the work of all the UN’s partners in PNG. "Without the support of the Government and your institutions, the UN’s contribution to improve the lives of women, men girls and boys in PNG would be much less effective," he said.
