Transparency International P-N-G says the arrest of another Member of Parliament sends a very positive message to the community.
It believes that the public can now sense that changes are occurring in response to crimes by public officials. T-I-P-N-G says its grateful for those who lodge truthful complaints against leaders who misuse their positions for personal gain. Its also grateful to police and anti-corruption directorate for bringing suspected officials before the courts. T-I-P-N-G says people have believed, for far too long, that Members of Parliament have been getting away with misuse and misappropriation of funds and, now with the efforts by government agencies, makes it very clear that officials do not have impunity, cannot steal, cheat, lie and betray them without punishment. It say these are signs that people are maturing as a nation and challenging the corrupt. TIPNG says a country that clearly demonstrates that it abides by its own laws against official corruption, improves community trust in government, reduces the loss of public funds and lifts the international reputation of that country. TIPNG says if this momentum is upheld, will show the world that corruption is not accepted in PNG and hold the guilty accountable, hence, gain respect internationally and most importantly in the eyes of its citizens.
