Hohola Police in Port Moresby have released the mother of the 3 children who were burnt alive in a fire yesterday at Burns Peak settlement in Port Moresby.
According to Hohola Police Station commander Ben Kua, the mother ran to the police station in fear of her life shortly after the incident. “The fire started around 3-4pm yesterday when the mother left the kids alone in the house and left to buy tinned fish for the rice she left cooking on the kerosene stove back at the house” “We are not really sure how the fire might have started but we believe one of the kids must have played around with the kerosene which might have triggered the fire to start at the first place” said Ben Kua. “It didn’t take long for the fire to spread as the house was a semi permanent house which the father recently painted and the paint intensified the fire making it impossible for the public to rescue the children on time” Neighbours of the affected family said, they tried to break the door down but it was impossible as the door was locked with a big chain and they did everything they could while having to bear the pain of the children screaming and crying in the burning house. Meanwhile, Station commander Ben Kua says the CID and Fire Department will do formal investigation and it is most likely that the parents will be charged for negligence. “ It is common sense that small children should not be left alone in the house with dangerous substances lying around house, what happened yesterday was very unfortunate for all of us and I don’t want this to happened again so I’m urging all parents to take responsibility of your own children” said Ben Kua.
